Germany is one of Europe’s most scientifically important clinical trial markets.

With a population of 84 million, 541 trial starts in 2024 and a clinical trial market valued at around €4.2 billion, Germany offers sponsors scale, research depth and access to highly specialized academic medical centers.

Its strength is not only patient volume. Germany’s advantage comes from its university hospital network, translational research institutions, disease specific research centers and strong therapeutic depth across oncology, neurology, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and advanced modalities.

The 2024 Medical Research Act also signals a clear shift toward faster startup and better study execution, with national CTA review reduced to 26 days and standardized contract clauses designed to reduce one of Germany’s long standing operational bottlenecks.

For sponsors, Germany remains one of the strongest European markets for scientifically credible Phase I to Phase III programs, especially where investigator quality, translational depth and academic credibility matter.
