Belgium combines a relatively small population with unusually high clinical research density.

With 11.6 million people, 474 clinical trial authorizations recorded in 2022 and a long standing position among Europe’s leading markets for trials per capita, Belgium has built a research ecosystem that is significantly larger than its geographic size would suggest.

Its strongest advantage is concentration. Seven university hospitals, major academic centres across Leuven, Ghent, Brussels, Liège and Antwerp, and 135 active CROs give sponsors access to experienced investigators and operational partners within a compact national footprint.

Belgium is particularly strong in Phase I and first in human research, alongside oncology, rare disease, cardiovascular research, neurology, paediatrics, immunology and advanced therapies.

For sponsors, this creates a practical advantage. Early phase expertise, established university hospital relationships, EU CTR alignment and short distances between major research centres can make Belgium useful for programs that require specialist investigators, intensive site oversight and coordinated European execution.
